Symposium on Indigenous Arts in the Academy: Diplomacies of Practice (2018)

Documentation of creative works and knowledge produced in the Symposium on Indigenous Arts in the Academy: Diplomacies of Practice (2017), 23-27 November 2018

Research Background

Diplomacies of Practice was a curated event that brought together Indigenous artists researchers, elders, leaders, and youth to engage in the processes of Indigenous diplomacies of sharing of cultural practices. The workshop and symposium aimed to explore, enact and reflect on ceremonial approaches to diplomacy, knowledge production, language/song reclamation and re-creation of cultural practice as part of caring for country. Activities in this event included song, dance, art, weaving, carving, and digital story-telling. The intent was to culturally activate the new VCA grounds. This was achieved through songs that “make and unmake the world” (Marett 2010).

Research Contribution

The performance event was a 2 hour event, including five performance groups, each performing 5-7 songs in six languages accompanied by dance.

Research Significance

Markers of esteem include the profile of performers and presenters who co-created the event, including Indigenous artists-researchers, elders, leaders, and youth, and academics and graduate researchers from all Australian states and territories (except for the ACT), the University of Melbourne, Sydney, York (Canada), and Alberta (Canada). The event has already and will lead to the production of secondary creative works, including photographic collections, instrument making, and performance works for festival performances.
